The State of Things

Time has replaced Space as Dee's primary consideration. As Einstein believed that all time happens at once, Dee scrapes away layers to reveal previous painting developments in order for the viewer to have a simultaneity of experiences.

"This series began as a response to our collective present times. The paintings showcase the TIMES in which we live, the CHANGES occurring in our world, and the MOVEMENT of things we cannot control.

Painting, as in life, is a process replete with uncertainties. Matter and the state of particles are always in flux. I have been constructing paintings on the basis of science and considering Einstein’s theories for twelve years now. Layers exposed and hidden permeate the work revealing snippets of dimensions supporting the whole. The world is full of secrets we are not privy to, as are paintings.

As a painter, striving for control is an exciting endeavor. I presently use cold wax as a tool to give the work a deeper complexity and to both reveal and obscure textures. I believe in Degas’ words that "art is not what you see, but what you make others see." I would add that it is "what you make others feel." I would like viewers to experience the struggles and the triumphs within the work process, and to know they are not alone in their struggles in this day and age."
